Irish cyclists harbouring ambitions of following in the footsteps of our top track riders can now apply to a very generous bursary to fund their goals.
The fund, provided by the Track Commission and overseen by Cycling Ireland, has been in place for the last two years.
And in 2016 a total of 25 riders were supported, receiving €9,500 in total between them.
This year, the total available is €10,000.
The monies awarded will vary according to the requirements of the individual riders.
It is dependent on the level of competition they are competing at and where they would be competing. Whether cyclists are students or unwaged will also be taken into account.
And the monies are available to all age groups, except Masters riders.
The purpose of the fund is simply to promote rider development by providing financial support for riders to travel to overseas racing or training events.
It is intended the funding will expose riders to higher levels of track competition and training.
The criteria are not so much results-based and anyone interested in upping their game on the boards can apply.
The maximum contribution made by the track commission will be 30 per cent of the cost of a trip applicants plan to take. This is up to a maximum of €200 for participation in European events and €150 for UK events.
And for a team planning on travelling to an event, the maximum contribution will be €500.
If there’s a group of eight or more travelling to the same event, that figure will be €1,000.
Any rider can apply, except Masters
Anyone can apply but those who are in education or “unwaged” will be given preference. And those competing professionally will not be considered.
Those interested in applying must have IRL on their current licence.
