Terrible news has emerged from the Axeon Hagens Berman camp overnight with the team releasing a statement saying that one of their rider is not expected to recover from serious injuries sustained in a crash during a race last weekend.
Chad Young, a talented up-and-coming rider from New Hampshire, was involved in a high-speed crash while descending on a stage of the Tour of the Gila recently.
Young was chasing back on after being part of an early 18-man breakaway that split up on the day’s climbs.
He, along with teammate Edward Anderson both went down on the descent along with at least four others.
Anderson was treated by race medical staff for minor injuries and finished the stage but Young’s injuries were far more severe.
Young was life-flighted to a hospital in Tucson, Arizona, where he was listed as in stable condition but with severe facial injuries.
However, a statement released this morning, Friday, was not as optimistic.
“There have been conflicting news reports concerning the condition of Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team rider Chad Young, who crashed Sunday in the Tour of the Gila. Unfortunately, Chad is not expected to recover from his injuries.
“The 21-year-old from Newmarket, New Hampshire, suffered severe head injuries in a high-speed mountain descent and was life-flighted to a hospital in Tucson, Ariz.
“At this time, his family asks for privacy. We at Axeon Hagens Berman respect the family's wishes and want them to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers during this devastating and difficult time.”
