Eddie Dunbar was yesterday crowned the winner of the U23 category in the British Cycling elite road series.
The 18 year-old NFTO man won courtesy of tallying the most points from each of the races that counted towards the series which concluded yesterday in Leicester.
Dunbar has enjoyed a superb season with the UK-based Continental team and has been right up there in some of the biggest races on the British calendar.
In the series, he got things off to a great start with fifth in his debut at the Chorley GP in early April followed by fourth overall in the 2-Day Tour of the Reservoir a week later after coming sixth on the two road stages.
He didn’t feature in the Wiltshire GP, Stockton GP or the Stafford Kermesse but was back inside the top 10 in the Ryedale GP last month where he finished ninth and helped teammate Ian Bibby to the win.
He was absent for the GP of Wales earlier this month as well as yesterday’s affair in Leicester but his results were more than enough to see him take a very prestigious award.
The Series features the best teams and riders from the UK with 11 squads competing over eight events in two blocks of races; the Spring Cup and the GP Series.
Riders were awarded points at each race and the leader after the eight events was determined the winner.
Steve Lampier (Raleigh GAC) emerged victorious while Dunbar finished seventh overall, though he did far less races.
Defending champion Yanto Barker (One Pro Cycling) was runner-up with Dunbar’s teammate Ian Bibby taking fourth.
One Pro Cycling claimed victory in the team standings and that’ll do their chances of securing a UCI Pro Continental licence no harm.
Dunbar will head to Girona for the next 10 days with NFTO as they prepare for their biggest goal of the season, the Tour of Britain next month.
