Gardai have charged a man with the hit and run death of a cyclist in Dublin following an arrest on Friday.
A man has been charged in connection with a hit and run that claimed the life of a married father of two in Dublin during the summer.
Christopher Coleman, a 26-year-old from Reuben St in Dublin 8, has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of 62-year-old Eugene Maher in the capital in June.
Mr Maher, a married man and father of two grown up children, was cycling in Clontarf, north Dublin, when he was hit by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene.
The victim was taken by ambulance from the scene at the junction of Howth Rd and Clontarf Rd on June 30th last to nearby Beaumont Hospital but was pronounced dead.
As well as being charged at Dublin District Court on Friday with causing Mr Maher’s death, the accused was also charged with failing to remain at the scene of the collision and driving without a licence and without insurance.
Judge Anthony Halpin was told Mr Coleman was arrested by gardai at his home at 7.30am on Friday. He was taken to Clontarf Garda station before the charges were put to him and he was brought to appear before the court.
Giving evidence to the court yesterday Garda Lynn Connaughton said the accused man made no comment when the charges were put to him.
Gardai did not object to bail, which was applied for by Mr Coleman’s lawyer Ann Sheridan, on condition the accused man signed on once a week at a Garda station, remained living at his current address and did not drive any vehicles.
Bail was granted, with the accused man speaking only to confirm the Garda station where he preferred to sign on at once a week.
Judge Halpin adjourned the case until January, when the accused would be served with the book of evidence.
No plea has yet been entered in the case. Mr Coleman was granted free legal aid after the court heard he was unemployed.
