
A man arrested for questioning about his alleged role in the hit and run death of a cyclist in Dublin has been released without charge.
A man who was being questioned about his alleged role in a hit and run that claimed the life of a cyclist has been released without charge by gardai.
The criminal investigation into the death of Dubliner Eugene Maher on the north side of the city on Monday of last week is continuing.
Garda are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions and the suspect could be arrested again and taken before the courts if a decision was taken to charge him in relation to the fatal collision.
The suspect, who is in his 20s, was arrested on Tuesday under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was held for questioning in Clontarf Garda station but has since been released.
Mr Maher (62) from Griffith Downs in Whitehall in north Dublin was hit by a car on the junction of Howth Road and Clontarf Road in Clontarf, north Dublin, last Monday at around 6.30pm.
The car involved in the incident was believed to be carrying a number of young men at the time.
However, while the vehicle stopped briefly after turning into the path of Mr Maher and fatally injuring him, it did not remain at the scene.
The car, a silver Volkswagen Golf (05 D registered), was later found abandoned in the Marino housing estate less than one kilometre from the scene.
Mr Maher’s death was the third time a cyclist had lost their lives on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital after the collision but was later pronounced dead.
The scene was examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the car was taken away for forensic examination.
Gardai are still appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who observed a silver Volkswagen Golf (05 D registered) in the vicinity of Fairview, Clontarf Road and Marino area between 6.15pm and 6.45pm on Monday of last week to contact them.
