The construction of the new velodrome on the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, west Dublin, is set to commence in the next couple of months. The contract to build the state-of-the-art facility has now been awarded and the Government has greenlit the project, saying it will cost up to €100 million.
Though delivering the new velodrome became a protracted saga for many years, it has been clear in recent times momentum behind the shared cycling and badminton facility had become unstoppable.
And now, finally, the Government has confirmed the timetable for construction starting, and being completed, and the approximate cost of the project. The estimated costs have been kept very vague at this stage, though the cycling community is more focussed on seeing the first shovels going into the ground.
Confirmation construction will start early next year is contained in the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport's sectoral investment plan.
It has been published to flesh out the pledges related to that Department in the National Development Plan Review 2025 published by Government earlier this year.
Construction of the cycling-badminton facility will begin in the first quarter of next year and it is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2027. The Government has estimated the new National Velodrome and Badminton Centre will cost between €50-€100 million.
The centre is the only planned National Sport Campus project listed in the sectoral investment plan that a contract has been awarded for at this point. It is understood Walls Construction will be the main contractor of the velodrome and badminton centre.
“The publication of this plan is important because it shows our commitment to continued investment in sport facilities across the country through schemes such as the Community Sport Facilities Fund and Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund," said Minister for State Charlie McConalogue
"It also commits to ensuring the completion of major national sports facilities over the next five years including the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre, and the National Cricket Centre.
"This Plan will also provide for funding to ensure the sustainability of our Post Office Network, in line with the commitment we made in the Programme for Government.”
