The growth of cyclocross in Ireland has been a constant feature on the domestic cycling scene in recent years and has now been recognised with a round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup.

It means the
stars of the sport will converge on Dublin later this year for top flight
racing.

News Ireland has
secured a round of the prestigious World Cup emerged today when the UCI released
details of changes it is making to cyclocross.

The management committee
of the UCI met over the last two
days in Zurich ahead of the 2020 Cyclocross World Championships this weekend.

It has decided to make changes to the way cyclocross is run in order to make it a more truly international sport.

Irish champion David Conroy has struck out in recent years and raced the European cyclocross scene; at pro and U23 level. Now he'll get the chance to ride a round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup on home turf. There will be 14 to 16 rounds in the new World Cup, compared to nine rounds in recent years.

This facilitates
the races being taken outside of cyclocross heartland countries, with Ireland
one of the beneficiaries; at least for this year.

A maximum of half the events will be held in Belgium and more will be hosted
by “nations that are active on
the international scene or committed to
developing cyclocross in their country”.

In the 2020-2021
cyclocross seasons there will be 14 rounds, Dublin being the second. The racing
will take place in the Irish capital in October.

The good news for Dublin is that it is one of the fixtures that will feature racing for all categories; elite men and women, U23 men and junior men and women.

The Dublin round is one of seven that will have racing for all the categories meaning Ireland really has done well. The rounds are:

  • 04.10.2020 Waterloo (USA) ME WE
  • 18.10.2020 Dublin (IRL) ME WE MU MJ WJ
  • 25.10.2020 Zonhoven (BEL) ME WE

Irish cyclocross
has been given a further boost in that the UCI has extended the number of
categories it will offer federations funds to field teams in the racing.

Under the new
changes funding will be available for male and female junior and U23 riders,
lessening the financial burden on national federations.
