Dublin politician injured by cyclist in hit and run getting out of car

Nial Ring was left with a wound on his head as well as whiplash and concussion and needed a neck brace after being hit by a cyclist in Dublin city centre.

A Dublin county councillor who has previously been critical of cyclist behaviour in the city has been injured in a hit and run involving a cyclist.

Cllr Nial Ring, who represents the north inner city on Dublin City Council, was sporting a wound to his head and suffered a neck injury when he was involved in a collision with a cyclist as he got out of his car.

"Outside Summerhill Post Office a cyclist coming down the wrong side of the road hit the door of my car as I was about to get out," he told The Herald.

"The door slammed back into me and I lost consciousness for a few moments.

"When I got out of the car my face was covered in blood as I had hit the car door window as I was about to get out. Needless to say the cyclist disappeared."

He said women working in the post office cleaned him up and at the time he felt he had not been too shook up.

“I thought I would be OK but I was sick and nauseous during the night and I had to go to the hospital yesterday morning.

"I had a CT scan of the brain and spine as well as an X-ray and the medical team in the Mater Hospital informed that I had concussion and whiplash."

He said he had previously complained about how some cyclists rode around the city, and now he had fallen victim himself.

"Some of them still behave in an irresponsible way, cycling the wrong way up streets, cycling on footpaths, breaking traffic lights and generally putting pedestrians, other road users and indeed themselves at risk.

"Something has to be done," he said, adding of his own situation after his incident: "I can't work. I'm self- employed. I can't train or drink alcohol for two or three weeks."
