Video: Dublin’s new €2.5m greenway repeatedly flooded while under construction

This shot shows a section of the greenway above the flood before the rest of it disappears under the water

Dublin’s new €2.5 million greenway between Baldoyle and Portmarnock has been hit by persistent flooding while still under construction.

The new project has
been taking shape of late and while it should be a very popular amenity with cyclists
and walkers let’s hope the flooding captured in the video below is resolved.

The clip was taken by a
stickybottle reader today at about 3.30pm after very heavy rainfall.

However, the cyclist who has contacted us said flooding of this stretch, close to the roundabout entering Portmarnock, has been a regular occurrence.

For anyone who knows the area, the flood section is between the Moyne Road junction and the roundabout at Portmarnock.

It’s part of the larger greenway between Baldoyle and Portmarnock along the coastal R106 road.

“I live in Portmarnock and cycle past it at least 10 times a week,” explained the cyclist who sent in the clip.

“I've called Fingal County
Council about it because it's flooded with any amount of rain but today was the
worst I've seen.

“They just keep saying it's still under construction. No doubt it will open before Christmas but then closed soon after for 'repairs' bit it just seems madness. It's flooded with minimal rain.”

At 1.8km in length the Baldoyle to Portmarnock greenway is the first phase of a long-term plan to provide a greenway along the full coastline of Fingal.

It is co-funded by the National Transport Authority and was due to be completed by the end of October, though completion has been delayed.
