Dublin dropped from top world cities for cycling, was once in top 10

There may be more people than ever in Dublin but the city is dropping down the world list for cities that are doing best in catering for cycling and promoting it further

Dublin has dropped out of the Copenhagenize top cities for cycling in the world. The Irish capital is no longer in the 20-city list despite having previously been in the top 10.

Because the list only features the top 20 cities, and
goes no further than that, it is not clear how far Dublin has fallen.

However, in the 2011 Copenhagenize top 20 cities of the
world for cycling, Dublin was ranked 9th and when the list was published again
two years later, in 2013, the Irish city was still 11th.

By 2015 that downward trajectory was now firmly
established, with Dublin falling again to 13th.

And in the 2017 list Dublin had dropped out of the top
20. Now in the just-published 2019 list Dublin is again nowhere to be seen in
the top 20.

The index, compiled every two years by the world leading
Danish urban planning consultancy group Copenhagenize, in 2015 said while the Irish
capital had been making progress in catering for cyclists, it had drifted a
little at that time and needed to do much more.

That slide, at least in the eyes of Copenhagenize, has
clearly continued with Dublin having slipped out of the top 20 since then and
failed to re-enter in this latest top 20 list, below.

Not surprisingly Copenhagen is top of the list; leading
the way from Amsterdam and Utrecht. These three top cities have for many years
been regarded as the leaders in cycling infrastructure.

The index is drawn up using a host of criteria including: Cycling infrastructure, cycling facilities; traffic calming - the prioritisation of cycling over motorised transport; gender split of cyclists; modal shares of bicycles and increase or decrease in the past 10 days; cycling safety indicators; to what extent cities have normalised cycling; the prevalence of cargo bikes; the reach of bike sharing; strength of cycling advocacy; political commitment to cycling; urban planning for cycling.
