Video Dublin to Drogheda cycling race 1933
It's a race that has been lost to the domestic road racing calendar in recent years, but now this video of the 1933 Dublin to Drogheda has surfaced online.
The rare video of Irish cycling racing between the wars has been shared on Facebook by Dublin Then and Now.
But the film is owned by Pathé, the French production company that invented newsreels.
It's news bulletins, with sound and vision, were the first to be broadcast in cinemas before movies.
This clip shows the 1933 Dublin-Drogheda run off in a 'Continental handicap' format. And the crowds turned out in their droves.
It starts in a packed Dublin and ends in front of large crowds in Drogheda. The riders clearly got drenched as they raced between the two.
It's well worth a look and was won by EG Dunne of Harps Cycling Club.
