A Dublin-based dad who has been cycling to and from school with his young children has shared a number of videos showing the close-call overtaking efforts by drivers they have had to endure on the roads.
While riding to and from school with his two young children the Dublin dad has seen drivers try to squeeze past him and his daughters, at times in wet conditions.
A number of the incidents have also involved drivers trying to get past the dad and his children by overtaking despite oncoming traffic ahead or despite cars being parked on both sides of the road.
These incidents – and thankfully none were crashes and nobody was hurt in any way – occurred in the area of Sandymount, south Dublin.
The girls' father told stickybottle the bends in some of these roads seemed to encourage drivers to speed and drift from their side of the road, even though it’s only about 500 metres long as it is situated between a roundabout and Sandymount Green.
“It is a regular occurrence to be overtaken on a blind bend,” he said. “Segregated cycle lanes are the safest way to allow children to cycle to school, which would in turn help to reduce traffic and help those that need to use their cars.
“Any half measures such as speed
bumps, signage, painted cycle lanes or public appeals only give the illusion of
trying to protect children, while just ensuring that cars can be used as
normal.”
