A Dublin cyclist has explained how he broke his wrist and needed almost 30 stitches in his leg and across his knee after being knocked off his bike at speed while training last Saturday morning.
Ray Morrissey (51) said a motorist hit him and then drove off as he was still on the ground, in pain and stunned at what had happened. Other people in the area came to his aid and despite a litany of injuries Mr Morrissey was expected to make a full recovery.
He has secured a CCTV image of a vehicle of interest that was in the area at the time he was hit. It is a silver/grey Audi, possibly with a 2012 reg, and with damage to the wing mirror on the passenger side.
In a devastating day for him, Mr Morrissey told RTE Radio 1 in an interview that just hours after his crash his father died suddenly in his sleep. Mr Morrissey, who is originally from north Dublin but is now living in Co Kildare, said the crash sent him flying through the air.
The incident occurred last Saturday morning just before
9am near Castledermot as Mr Morrissey, a cyclist and triathlete, was completing
a training ride.
He said he was badly bruised, suffered a broken wrist and needed 28 stitches. But he said his overriding feeling as he lay on the ground injured was bewilderment that the motorist who hit him then drove off.
Gardai have confirmed an investigation into the hit and
run is underway and a local person has supplied CCTV footage of a car believed
to have been in the area at the time. Mr Morrissey has urged the driver of that
car to come forward.
“I was coming around the bend on the left side and he was on the opposite side of the road,” he said. “There was a slip road off to my left and instead of going round the bend he was going up the strip road and came straight across the road and hit me straight on.”
He added the impact of the crash left him “flying in
the air and hitting the ground at an awful rate”.
“I looked up and I was still in the corner of the bend
thinking the car had stopped and someone was going to run out and help me
get off the road but nothing was happening and I looked up and I could see this
car still travelling on its journey.”
