A Dublin cyclist sprang to the rescue yesterday when a young couple on their way to hospital to have their baby got caught out on a city street.
Lisa Connolly and her husband Stephen Connolly jumped into their car at their home in Celbridge, Co Kildare, yesterday morning when Lisa went into labour.
Because they already have one child and had been through the birth process before they felt they had plenty of time to make it from their home into Dublin city centre so Lisa could have her baby in Holles St Maternity Hospital.
They dropped their 4-year-old son Jake into crèche near their home and off they went for Dublin to add to their growing family.
However, they got as far as the south inner city before disaster struck, when Lisa’s waters broke well short of the hospital and it was clear the baby wasn’t going to wait.
Stuck by the side of the road near Christchurch and no doubt in more than a bit of panic as the rush hour was in full flight, the couple were on their own.
Or so they thought.
A passing cyclist spotted them as he made his way through the city and realised what was happening, bringing vital help and calm to them just at the right time.
The cyclist contacted 999 and stayed with them to help them through their ordeal, which had a very happy ending.
“Lisa's waters broke at Christchurch and as soon as this happened she gave me a shout,” Stephen (33) told Independent.ie.
“She was saying: 'Pull over, the baby is on the way out'.”
The cyclist not only called the paramedics but he stayed on as the medics on the other end of the phone relayed instructions to Stephen, Lisa and the good Samaritan cyclist who was getting significantly more action on his morning commute than he expected!
Stephen said Lisa did all the hard work but with the paramedics on the phone and the cyclist helping to relay their instructions, when the baby was half way out the proud dad pulled him out the rest of the way.
“The paramedic on the phone the phone talked me through a couple of bits and pieces. He told me to clear the airways,” he explained.
Moments later a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance crew arrived and took over.
The baby, a boy they have named Johan, weight in at 6lb 11oz and was driven to the hospital with mother in the ambulance as proud dad Stephen followed behind.
He told Independent.ie he was very thankful to both the cyclist and Dublin Fire Brigade, saying they were a huge help exactly when he, Lisa and baby Jonah really need them.
Do you know the cyclists involved? Are you the cyclist involved? We’d love to track them down for a chat and a general massive pat on the bike.
If you know who the cyclist is drop us a line and we’ll contact them to see if they’d like to do an interview.
