A Dublin car garage and online retailer has apologised and offered a 10 per cent discount on all bike racks - for a few days - after facing a backlash over an ill-advised online poll about cyclists.
The poll was on the Facebook page of Mick’s Garage and asked people if cyclists should “pay road tax”. The garage, which is based on Park West Industrial Estate in Dublin 12 and trades off a substantial website, posted the poll saying it knew it was controversial.
“Should cyclists have to pay road tax?” the poll asked. “Vote in our poll. Forget the line debate a few weeks ago, THIS is controversial,” it stated, with a smiling face emoji.
Aside from the fact “road tax” does not exist in Ireland, with motorists paying emissions tax instead, the poll was always likely to result in anti cyclist comment, which is precisely what happen through yesterday and today.
Many
people took to social media to bemoan the question posed and asked why the garage
seemed to be anti-cyclist and why some unsavoury comments were permitted in
messages below the Facebook poll.
Many social media users expressed their disappointment with the poll and said they would not do business with the garage in the future. This evening Mick’s Garage has deleted the poll and offered a conciliatory message to cyclists.
“Respect to all
the cyclists out there!” it said. “We're giving 10 per cent off all bike racks
for the rest of this week especially for cyclists. Use code WELOVECYCLISTS.
“Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion, clearly it's been a controversial topic but it's in jest and all road users should respect each other #welovecyclists #weresorry.”
