Video: Drunk fan waving to helicopter takes down Campenaerts in Belgian champs

Victor Campenaerts crashing out of the Belgian road race championships after an incident with a fan.

 

European TT champion Victor Campenaerts has said his Belgian national road race championships ride was derailed by a drunken fan.

Belgian sports media site Sporza published a video of the incident which can be viewed here.

The 26-year-old Lotto-Soudal rider had already won the national TT title. However, others were more hotly tipped for the road crown.

Campenaerts took to social media to describe how he had come crashing down in a very unfortunate incident during the road race.

"Pretty good legs but sadly ended the race with a crash. Light concussion,” he said.

“Due to a drunk spectator that was on the road. The huge crowd was awesome, but please stay at the side of the road."

The fan stepped into the road with 6km remaining, with the rider unable to avoid him.

"It's a funny story. I was overrun by a drunken Lampaert supporter, who was waving to the helicopter. I couldn't avoid him,” he told the Belgian media.

Yves Lampaert (QuickStep) won the race; by 23 seconds from team mate Philippe Gilbert. Jasper Stuyven (Trek–Segafredo) was 3rd a further six seconds in arrears.
