Drunk driver who hit cyclist in Dublin had 85 previous convictions

The cyclist was making a turn when hit by the speeding driver, who was drunk and banned from driving. He hobbled away leaving a scene of "mayhem".

 

A man who was banned from driving and had 85 previous convictions has been jailed for five years for a crash in which a cyclist was thrown into the air.

Stephen Collins, a 27-year-old with an address at North Circular Road, Dublin, was under the influence of drink and drugs and fled the scene.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to a number of charges relating to the incident on Davitt Rd, Dublin 12, on March 19th, 2016.

The charge included reckless endangerment and failing to offer assistance.

The court was told Collins lost control of his car and after hitting the cyclist and throwing her into the air his car hit the wall of a pub and the collided head-on with another vehicle.

He then got out of his car and hobbled away, leaving the injured cyclist and driver at the scene.

Judge Martin Nolan described Collins as a menace to society who had caused mayhem. The judge told him he was lucky nobody was killed.

Collins was driving in a silver Mazda and up Davitt Rd at the time. While the speed limit was 50km per hour, it was estimated he was doing 80-90km.

A cyclist ahead began to turn right at a junction, with the green light in her favour. Collins was driving against a red light and while he attempted to brake he was travelling so fast he couldn’t stop.

The female cyclist was thrown into the air and suffered a head injury, which the court was told continues to affect her.

Collins lost control of the car which hit the wall of the Marble Arch Pub. The car then veered sideways across the rod, hit a kerb at the Luas tracks and then collided head on with another car.

As he hobbled away he looked in the window of the car at the other driver, who had been injured and needed to be cut out of his car.

However, he continued on his way and escaped the scene. Other people in the car with him also fled.

Collins was identified using CCTV footage and DNA later linked him to the crashed Mazda.
