Drunk cyclist fined after repeatedly falling off bike in front of Dublin garda

A man has been fined for drunk cycling despite saying he only fell off his bike several times because his arm was in plaster due to a broken hand and because conditions were wet at the time

A man has been fined for drunken cycling after falling from his bike a number of times after a garda - Irish police officer - urged him to park his bike and walk home.

However, a Dublin court was told that apart from a very
minor public order incident many years ago the man, Val
Pusanov (51), was not a person who came to the attention of gardai for crimes.

He also insisted on the day of the incident, outside Dáil Eireann in Dublin’s south inner city, that while he had cans of beer earlier in the day, the impact of them had worn off.

Mr Pusanov said the reason he was unsteady on the bike and fell a number of times was because he had injured his hand, which was in plaster, rather than because he was intoxicated.

He said he had broken his hand and pointed out conditions were slippery due to rain, adding if he felt drunk he would not cycle. Judge Brian O’Shea, at Dublin District Court, imposed a fine of €400 on Mr Pusanov for drunk cycling.

The court was told he became stubborn and was arrested on
the day after he refused to park the bike and walk home. He fell off the bike
twice initially and again after the garda approached him to check on him.

The incident occurred at 8.30pm on the night of September 30th last, with the garda involved saying he had gone to see if Mr Pusanov, Camden St, Dublin 2, was OK after he had fallen twice close to Dáil Eireann, the national parliament building.

The garda said he approached him to help him, and not
take any action against him, but Mr Pusanov refused to leave his bike and so he
was arrested.
