A number of drivers have been parking their vehicles on new cycle lanes in Dublin despite stumpies having been installed to ensure the lanes are kept free for cyclists.
The photos below are just a selection of some of the shots that have appeared on social media in recent days since new segregated cycle lanes have been completed at a number of locations around the city.
Westland Row in the south inner city was always a hot spot for drivers leaving their cars and vans illegally parked for short periods, thus forcing cyclists out into busy traffic to overtake them.
There was relief for many cyclists who ride in the city to see the Westland Row black spot was one of those locations where a new segregated cycle lane was installed by Dublin City Council last week.
However, a steady flow of photos published on social media since then reveals some drivers are simply ignoring the new segregated lanes and parking their cars there.
It appears the stumpies, which move a little, are small enough to be driven over. And drivers in vehicles can also enter the cycle lanes via gaps in the stumpies, including at pedestrian lights.
One of those vehicles parked on the Westland Row segregated cycle lane in recent days was a Garda car. However, members of the Garda are not subject to many rules of the road when they are going about their business.
In means the gardai who parked a patrol car outside Pearse St train station were in breach of no laws or rules. But it is still very disappointing to see a Garda vehicle parked on a newly minted segregated cycle lane.
Hopefully the other drivers still insisting on parking there will feel the full brunt of enforcement on them. If gardai allow flouting of the new lanes at this time, when they have just been completed, their installation will have been pointless.
