Driver could not stop after hitting cyclist because he was going to Mass
An Irish club spin had a close encounter with a motorist; with an usual twist when he was apprehended.
When the driver was identified and spoken to by the Garda, he said he was rushing to get to Mass at the time.
The club spin was riding in the south of the country when a passing motorist clipped one of the riders.
As a result, the wing mirror on the vehicle was broken off. It hit the elbow of one of the cyclists as the motorist was passing the group.
The incident occurred at about 11.30am yesterday as the group was coming to the start of a dual carriageway.
Not long after the incident it took to social media to appeal for witnesses.
“The driver didn't stop and kept going,” the club said. “The car was silver with black mirrors, now missing a left mirror.
“It has been reported to (the) guards. We would appreciate any help from the public on this.”
The club later added to the social media exchange, saying the driver had been identified.
Its latter update said the cyclist the motorist clipped was wearing high-vis gear. And the club said the cyclist also had a rear light.
It then added: “(The) driver was thankfully found by guards and admitted hitting the cyclist and claimed to be rushing for mass.”
