A driver who recorded a line of vehicles behind a “lycra clad” cyclist riding on a road beside an adjacent greenway has said he was not using a hand held camera to record the footage from inside his car.
Instead, the driver said he was using a camera mount which he keeps in his car and adjusted while filming to show the greenway beside the Co Cork road that the cyclist was riding on.
The video, published by Twitter user Derry Chambers, provoked a lot of debate on the social media platform. The cyclist was recorded on Crosshaven Road on Saturday, with Derry Chambers saying his presence on the road, and refusal to ride on the adjacent greenway, had resulted in “a half mile procession” of vehicles behind him.
He also believed cyclists could not expect to be able to use the roads for training or racing, saying if they did so, people involved in other sports could do the same.
Derry Chambers added one delivery driver claimed the cyclist and “two further groups of lycra-clad team cyclists who had decided they were priority users” of an 8km stretch of road between Leary’s Cross and Crosshaven had extended his day’s work by 20 minutes – due to claimed delays they had caused.
Derry Chambers added the lone cyclist had said he was not using the greenway because the number of walkers and joggers on it would slow his progress. He believed this complaint was “ironic” considering the cyclist had slowed drivers by his decision to use the road instead.
“For what it’s worth, I’m a cyclist myself,” Derry Chambers added in his Twitter posts about his video and the response to it. “But I’m one who realises that with entitlements also comes responsibilities.
“In other words, I pull in if I find that other traffic cannot passe me for a considerable distance on a winding road. If society is to tolerate cyclists using the public highway as a training ground/racetrack (then) what is to stop sulky driver, puc (sic) fada enthusiasts etc doing the same.”
