Driver arrested after cyclist seriously injured during group event

Gardai have arrested a man after the car he was driving hit a cyclist at Moll's Gap in Kerry during a cycling event

A cyclist has been seriously injured while riding an event at Moll’s Gap in Co Kerry on Saturday morning.

A motorist has been arrested and questioned by gardai
arising from the crash during while the cyclist was hit by a car.

However, while the cyclist was taken from the scene in an
ambulance to hospital his life is not in danger.

Gardai have now issued an appeal for information as they
investigate the crash and said the driver was expected to appear before the
courts.

“Gardaí in Killarney are appealing for witnesses following a
serious collision involving a cyclist and a car in Co Kerry,” a statement
from the Garda said.

“At approximately 11.30am a male cyclist in his 30s was seriously
injured when he was struck by a car,” it added of the crash at Eirk,
Moll’s Gap, on the N71.

“He was removed by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry. His
injuries are described serious but not thought to be life threatening.

“It’s understood he was taking part in a cycling event at the time
of the collision.

“The driver of the car, a man in 50s, was arrested by
investigating Garda for suspected dangerous driving.

“He has since been released is expected to appear before Killarney
District Court in the coming days charged in connection with the investigation.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and in particular to motorists
who were traveling on the route at the time to make any dash cam footage
available to investigators.
