A man has admitted killing Irish club cyclist and seriously injuring another by driving dangerously two years ago.
Gavin James Moore of North Down Cycling Club was fatally injured and Gareth
Boyle was seriously injured when hit by a driver in a car while they were out
training on the Bangor Road, Ards, Co Down, in July, 2017.
Hing Tong Cheung, a 61-yeare-old man from Bangor, had been due to go on
trial at Downpatrick Crown Court last week.
However, the case has been adjourned for sentencing later this month after a
guilty plea was entered in respect of both charges.
Judge Neil Rafferty QC directed the jury to find the accused “guilty by confession” after his plea.

And while Hing Tong Cheung was released on bail pending his next court appearance later this month, Judge Rafferty said he likely faced a jail sentence.
“These are amongst the most difficult type of cases that these courts deal
with,” Judge Rafferty told the court of the case which is due before the court
again in October 24th.
“A young man has died and another young man has sustained life changing
injuries and, in fairness to the defendant, he is a man who has never been in
trouble in any way shape or form.”
However, he said the release of the accused on bail should not be
interpreted in the wrong way.
“I should warn you that the guidelines for this type of offending almost
invariably are custodial sentences.
“The fact that I’m releasing you on bail should not be taken as an
indication as to how I will deal with you.
“I mean what I say that these are incredibly difficult cases and incredibly
tragic cases and i can only express my sympathy, and the sympathy of the court,
to the family of the deceased and to Mr Boyle personally.”
