The Director of Public Prosecutions has declined to prosecute the driver in the crash above, during which Ciaran Cannon TD was knocked from his bike and up onto the bonnet of the vehicle, suffering significant injury.
Dáil Deputy Cannon took to Twitter today to call again for a new system that would allow cyclists lodge their videos of incidents on the roads and also call for better training for gardaí to assess the seriousness of incidents involving cyclists.
"It’s time to put in place specially trained Gardai who will adjudicate expertly on road traffic violations using video evidence submitted via an online portal," he said. "This is my video evidence (local CCTV) and our DPP has decided it’s not sufficient to secure a prosecution."
Cannon was hit by the driver last year during a charity cycle near Clifden, Co Galway. He required surgery on his leg after being driven into as he suffered a tibial plateau fracture.
He was cycling 600km, from Mizen Head to Malin Head in 24 hours, in aid of the children’s charity Hand in Hand, at the time. When riding through the village of Moycullen on the evening of Friday, July 2nd, a driver in an SUV turning right drove into him.
