Mark Downey rode the 170-lap madison race at the European Games on this busted Mavic wheel after an incident at the start of the event.
Mark Downey has shown off the Mavic front wheel that got
him through 170 frantic laps of track racing at the European Games velodrome
despite being broken up.
The Madison race in Minsk was 200 laps and just 30 laps
in Downey collided with another rider.
He said he felt a bump but simply continued with his race;
only realising after the event how beaten up his wheel was.
He was riding the race with Fintan Ryan and while they
were in a podium position for a long time they finished in 8th place.
Also at the European Games the women’s team pursuit
line-up placed 5th in qualifying in a time of 4.31.358.
Felix English finished 4th in the scratch race; just
pipped for the bronze medal on the line by Belarusian Yauheni Karaliok.
In the women’s Keirin Robyn Stewart finished second in
her repechage. Lydia Boylan was 11th in her points race.
Oral Walsh finished 10th in the women’s scratch race, and
Potts was 11th in the men’s points Race,
Robyn Stewart’s sprint campaign was ended by Italian
Miriam Vece in the 1/32 match sprint repechages. Shannon McCurley finished 8th
in the omnium.
