Mark Dowling has taken the Leinster Road Race Championships in Bunclody, Co Wexford, today, Sunday; edging out local man David Walsh (Slaney CC).

The DID Dunboyne victor, who is reigning National Hill Climb Champion, took the win in an uphill gallop from the breakaway group, just about besting Walsh, with Martin Mizgajski (Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers) in third.

UCD’s Ian Richardson finished a little further back in the breakaway sprint in the A1/A2 race but did enough to take the A2 title, ahead of team mates Mike Brookfield and Ross Collins.

As anticipated, the new National Road Race Champion Mel Spath (Cycleways) took the women’s race from Ann Dalton (Orwell Wheelers) and Monica Marconi (Henry J Lyons).

The UCD students were victorious again in the A3 event, with Eoin Morton taking a great win from Cian Delaney (Stamullen) and Brian Cullen (Barrow Wheelers).

David Peelo (Kilcullen) lifted the Vets’ title, with the junior crown going to Ciaran Campbell (Drogheda Wheelers).

Around 170 riders signed on for a full racing programme over an undulating course. A group of 12 riders went clear in the main event A1/A2 race, with the winner Dowling proving the best in the final 5kms of climbing towards the finish.

However, he was run very close by local man Walsh in the gallop to the line.
