It’s another action-packed weekend of racing in Blarney with the club hosting an event with a difference.

Some of the country’s top hand cyclists, visually impaired and paracyclists will convene on the Cork town for a time-trial event to be run on the old Mallow road.

Terry O’Neill, a club member, has assumed charge of the event and he’s optimistic of a good turnout, with current UCI world champion hand cyclist Mark Rohan, the star attraction.

“Hopefully now everything will run smoothly and the weather will be good for it,” said O’Neill yesterday.

“We’ve got assurances that some of the top cyclists in the country will be coming so that should add to it.”

Indeed, several of our top Paralympians are slated to come to Blarney for what should be as much a family day out, as much as an introduction to the increasingly popular disciplines of cycling.

Supporting the event are the famous Rebel Wheelers, a multi sports club for kids aged 5-18 with physical disabilities. The club was set up in 2008 by a group of parents and the Irish Wheelchair Association and encourages children to participate in a wide range of sports and activities including hand cycling.

The event will be a time trial of up to 20km but there will also be shorter distances for the kids.

Sign on (from 11am) and start/finish line will be at Rathpeacon National School just outside Blarney with the first rider departing at 12noon.

The event will be open to everyone so anyone wishing to give hand cycling a try is more than welcome.

Last weekend the club ran the hugely successful festival of racing with the Osborne criterium on Saturday followed by the Donal Crowley and Kay Stratton Memorial races on Sunday and if the organisation and planning is on a par this weekend, no one will be disappointed.
