Giro d'Italia stage 4 winner and king of the mountains classification leader, Joe Dombrowski, will not start today's stage 6 of the race after his bad crash in the final of yesterday's stage.
The UAE Team Emirates rider becomes the third man whose participation in the Giro has been claimed by the crash. Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) is out of the event after being unable to finish yesterday and Francois Bidard (AG2R Citroën) finished the stage but has now been forced out.
Landa's team has confirmed he suffered extensive injuries, which look like they will ruin the rest of his season. He suffered broken collarbone and multiple ribs on his left side. He spent last night in Riccione Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance from the crash scene yesterday.
Dombrowski's team said while X-rays showed he had suffered no broken bones he had been diagnosed with concussion, suffering symptoms including a "balance impairment".
Meanwhile, though Francois Bidard managed to get back on his bike after the crash and rode into the finish 4km away, he has since been diagnosed with a broken collarbone and he is out of the race.
A fan's video (above), recorded from the roadside, shows the sheer speed of the crash with just over 4km to go. It appears one of the riders hit the race official standing in the centre of the road warning the riders of the traffic island.
While the official was there as a warning and an alarm was sounding to warn the riders of the obstacle ahead, the speed of the bunch in the finale meant there was no room for error. And now sadly all three riders who crashed are out of the race.
