Karol Dolan of promoting club Omagh Wheelers CC has taken the final stage of the Tour of Omagh three-day this afternoon, Sunday, to reclaim the yellow jersey he took on the opening road stage on Friday.
Dolan jumped the field in the closing 500 metres on Friday evening’s road stage and having gotten a small gap he just about managed to hold off Paul Coyle (Strabane-Lifford CC), with a photo finish needed to separate them at the head of the bunch.
However, Coyle hit back during yesterday’s road stage, which also ended in a bunch sprint and which saw him take victory and earn him the yellow jersey and the lead in the points classification.

He went into today’s action – featuring a morning time trial and afternoon road stage - on equal time overall with thirty other riders; all of those having finished in the bunch on the opening two stages.
In this morning’s 2.5 mile time trial it was Rodney Stewart of Team Vision Racing who proved quickest in a time of 5:30, taking the stage from John McGlaughlin (East Antrim Audi) by four seconds with Ryan Patton (Ballymoney CC) in third a further four seconds back.
The yellow jersey of Coyle put in a very good ride to take 6th, just 11 seconds down while stage 1 winner Dolan was one place behind him in 7th, some 13 seconds down on the winner.
Those were the GC time gaps at the head of affairs going into this afternoon’s 40 mile road stage, with Stewart holding the yellow jersey.
However, with that final stage finishing at the summit of the category 1 Pigeon Top climb, there was everything to race for.
In the end it was stage 1 winner Dolan who fared best, taking the flag at the top of the climb on his own as the field split. He took stage victory by 12 seconds from Steven Bruce (Antrim East Audi) with Daragh McCarter (Omagh Wheelers) a further five seconds back.
The yellow jersey of Stewart was 11th, some 49 seconds down meaning the outright win went to Dolan, with Bruce second overall McCarter third and stage 2 winner Coyle in 4th.
During the final stage, Seamus Keenan (Omagh Wheelers CC) and Jim Hegarty (Phoenix CC) attacked after around 15miles of racing and built up a lead of 45secs at one point.
However, after the final bonus sprint the bunch caught the leading duo and the riders braced themselves for the final two-mile climb up to the finish.
As they hit the bottom of the climb the bunch was in tact, though splits appeared immediately the road went upwards. The main contenders soon made their presence felt at the front, and Bruce started to put the pressure on, with the yellow jersey of Stewart being distanced a little by around the halfway point of the climb.
As the riders tackled the main part of the ascent they faced a tough headwind over the open mountain road, with spectators having a clear view of the final 1km. With the home crowd roaring for their man, Dolan did not disappoint and put in a massive burst in the last couple of hundred metres to distance Bruce and take the stage and winner’s yellow jersey. He also won the points classification.
His Omagh Wheelers team mate Niall McEnhill took the KOH classification. Tom McGread from Omagh Wheelers was 1st unplaced vet and Brendan Collins from the club was the 1st unplaced junior. Judith Russell from Phoenix CC finished 1st unplaced woman.
