One of the most active clubs in the country, Belfast-based VC Glendale is holding a fundraising sportive – Toby’s Charity Cycle - this weekend and it’s easy to support them.
The event raises money for Cancer Fund for Children and
while it started as a smaller social event for Toby Watson’s birthday it has grown
in recent years.
Toby is a well-known face on the Irish road racing and cyclocross scenes; a former racing cyclist himself who comes from a cycling family and is now, of course, a well known cycling photographer.
If you’ve raced in Ireland in recent years, chances are
Toby has photographed you. And you will certainly have seen his photos on
stickybottle.
Toby’s Charity Cycle began five years ago to mark Toby’s
birthday and it has a grown to a 300-rider sportive with a whopping £15,000
raised.
All of the money goes to help children fighting cancer. Because
the sportive and the associated fund-raising effort is all run by volunteers,
there are no costs related to administration or employing anyone.
There’s no middle man; the money goes straight to the cause. The details of this weekend’s cycle in Belfast are set out below.
Hopefully you can make it along. But, if not, you can donate a few quid by clicking onto the event’s JustGiving page and you can give some money hassle-free.
Toby is a stalwart of the home scene and he helps VG Glendale organise road races and cyclocross races. The Imps section of the club also gets lots of children out on their bikes.
It would be great if you could donate to this great event Toby and his club mates are organising. That link to donate again can be found right here.
Event details for this Saturday
Last year the club’s mascot Cian McGrath led out the event and this time around he's back; in full health and proof this event works to really help children.
The cycle is only 50km long. Leaving from the Balmoral Hotel, Blacks Road, Belfast, at 10am the cycle is a leisurely and flat 50km for all abilities.

It’s a friendly fun day out for all clubs and groups
looking to enjoy the social side of cycling.
This year there will also be a 25km kids' cycle which
will ride out with the adults and rejoin them later and cycle back in with them
to the hotel.
The PSNI will escort riders on the ride, with the route
once again being fully marshaled.
After the ride it's back to the Balmoral Hotel where there will be plenty of food and refreshments for all the cyclists.
A minimum donation of £10 is all that's required to enter on the day. But you must also have a Cycling Ireland licence, which can be taken out on the day.
Like the online donations that anyone can make, all of the entry fees also go straight to Cancer Fund for Children.
