Medical staff treating Egan Bernal for the injuries he sustained in a crash in Colombia last week believe the 25-year-old Tour winner and Giro champion will make a quick recovery.
Bernal suffered
a litany of injuries when he hit the back of a bus at speed last Monday. He was
in Colombia as part of a team training camp and was on his TT bike, riding
ahead of the group, when he crashed.
He suffered a broken femur, kneecap, ribs and fracture vertebrae as well as a range of other injuries, including hand and mouth fractures. Bernal underwent several surgeries, with medics forced to take extra precautions to ensure his spine was not damaged.
Bernal said he
was almost killed, adding he had a 95 per cent of being paralysed, such were
his injuries. However, medical staff at Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogota now appear bullish about his
recovery prospects and the pace of that recovery.
Because of the force with which he hit the parked bus, Bernal’s upper body had to be drained of blood and other fluids as well as air. The apparatus used in that procedure has now been removed and no infection has arisen; something the doctors are very happy with.
"The procedure to remove the drains of the thoracostomy that was performed was carried out, which allows satisfactory progress in the treatment of closed chest trauma," a new statement from the hospital stated.
"A very positive aspect of his medical progress is that he has shown no signs of infection. In addition to this we remain very focused on pain control and management. The patient continues with nutritional support to feed him
"All the professionals who make up the medical team that works for the recovery of the patient, Egan Bernal, remain confident of his prompt recovery and confirm our commitment and dedication to service."
