Dillon Corkery of Team Ireland saw his participation ended by a crash in the elite men's road race at the European Road Championships in the Netherlands. The Rás Tailteann champion was among a very large of fallers in the bunch on a narrow road and stayed down.

As most of the other riders got up off the road and grass verge and straightened themselves out to continue in the race, it was clear a small number were too badly injured to continue. Corkery was one of them and has lay on the roadside clutching his arm.

He has been taken to hospital for checks to determine if he has suffered any broke bones, with his left elbow appearing to be the source of most of his discomfort immediately after the crash. It was unclear what caused the incident, which forced several riders out of the race.

Corkery, who also represented Ireland at the Worlds this year, was part of a two-man Irish team in the race. While Sam Bennett and Ryan Mullen were also initially selected, Bennett was forced to withdraw due to illness and Mullen could not ride today due to personal reasons.
