"Did I really win?" Sam Bennett's stunned reaction; goes back into green | Video

Sam Bennett on the podium in the green jersey in Ile de Re after today's 168.5 km stage 10 at the Tour de France. The Irishman is now in a really strong position to take green all the way to Paris next Sunday week

Sam Bennett insisted on checking with his team that he had really won today's stage 10 on the Tour de France before allowing himself a full celebration.

The Irish rider can be seen in the video below looking for confirmation from his team, asking them over the radio: "Did I really win it? Did I get it?"

And one result of his victory today is that he has re-taken the green jersey from the man who has won the points classification seven times over the last eight years, Peter Sagan of Bora-hansgrohe.

Deceuninck-QuickStep's Bennett began the stage in 2nd place in the points classification to Sagan, with the pair now having swapped the green jersey twice.

Ireland's Bennett had 131 points starting out today's stage, to Sagan's 138. While the Irish rider is targeting green on this Tour, he was happy to take 3rd at the intermediate sprint today as he was clearly saving as much power as he could for the final sprint.

When Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) won that intermediate sprint he took 20 points. Sagan was next across the line at the sprint point in Châtelaillon-Plage, taking 17 points, and Bennett was next meaning he collected 15 points.

That nudged Sagan another two points clear of his Irish rival in the green jersey contest. But once the stage came down to a big bunch sprint Bennett stepped up to take the win and also the green jersey.

The final sprint win into Saint-Martin-de-Ré on the island of île de Ré saw Bennett win from Caleb Ewan and Sagan, with Bennett taking 50 points for his victory.

Ewan took 30 points for his runner-up placing and Sagan claimed 20 points; those points in the final sprint putting a huge 30 points between Bennett and Sagan.

At the end of the stage Bennett now has 196 points, Sagan is 2nd on 175 points and Bryan Coquard (B&B Hotels Vital Concept) is now 3rd in the classification on 129 points with Trentin 4th on 123 points.

For now it looks like a two-horse race between Bennett and Sagan and tomorrow's stage looks like an absolutely ideal opportunity for Bennett to take another win and put a serious down-payment on taking the green jersey all the way into Paris.

The 167.5km stage from Châtelaillon-Plage to Poitiers tomorrow is flat and also features an intermediate sprint after 107.5km. If Bennett were to do the same tomorrow as he did today - man-mark Sagan at the intermediate sprint and then win the stage - he would be in a fantastic position.
