Arnaud Démare has completed a mid-season transfer from Groupama-FDJ to Arkéa Samsic immediately the transfer windowed opened today. The French rider departs after a bitter dispute with Groupama-FDJ manager Marc Madiot over his decision to omit Démare from the Tour de France selection this year.
Démare did not hold back at the time, saying he had always believed he was valued after such a long and successful time at the team, but clearly he had been wrong in thinking that. He was left at home for the French Grand Tour after Madiot opted for Thibaut Pinot, riding his last Tour, and David Gaudu instead.
The 31-year-old has been with Groupama-FDJ, in its various guises, for his entire career, joining as a stagiaire way back in 2011 and becoming its most prolific winner during that time, with his renowned sprint. However, his Tour omission this year followed a well publicised personality clash with Gaudu, who has been the growing force in the team.
Démare said he was glad Groupama-FDJ had agreed to let him go and was looking forward to his time with Arkéa Samsic, where he will ride for the remainder of this year and at least the next two seasons.
“I have signed for the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Arkéa, but I was able to terminate my contract with Groupama and FDJ by mutual agreement in order to join Arkéa-Samsic and compete with this structure at the end of the 2023 season from August 1st,” Démare said.
“I'd like to thank these two partners for releasing me from my final months of contract. It's the best thing that could have happened to me to turn the page quickly and look to the future. I'm really looking forward to the end of the season with the Arkéa-Samsic team.
“I'm opening a new chapter in my career with a team that believes in me and motivates me. I'm determined to do well. Emmanuel Hubert's talks were enthusiastic and motivating. I want to make a success of my debut as soon as possible in my new colours. I'm highly motivated.”
