Deignan leads the breakaway in the Tour of Utah in 2012, a challenging year for him
Former Vuelta stage winner, Philip Deignan’s return to the UnitedHealthcare team has been confirmed for the 2013 season.
The Donegal man moved to the squad 12 months ago from RadioShack and is staying with them for next year.
He will be joined in the ranks of the US-based Pro Continental team by Ireland’s 2012 track Olympian Martyn Irvine, who confirmed his move to the US outfit just yesterday.
Deignan had his best year in 2009 when he took his Vuelta stage win and finished 9th overall.
However, he had a poor 2010 and after moving from Cervelo to RadioShack for the 2011 season, he was restricted by team duties. He was hopeful of gaining results of his own in 2012 with his move to UnitedHealthcare but was again dogged by health issues.
However, the team say they are very confident the 29-year-old’s obvious outstanding ability will shine.
“Phil is coming off a season of bad luck and health and the reset button has been pushed,” said team general manager Mike Tamayo.
“The team has full confidence that Phil can get back to his top 10 Grand Tour form. Phil is going to be someone to look out for in the big mountains.”
At 29 years, Deignan still has plenty of time to regain his form and capture the big wins that he is capable of and that Irish fans and bike riders would love to see.
