Despite not being originally listed amongst the starters for the United Healthcare team in the Tour de San Luis, Philip Deignan has been included by the team for the Argentinean race.

The race kicks off later today, Monday, with a relatively flat 164-kilometre stage from San Luis to Villa Mercedes. It will be more suited to Deignan’s team mate, Jake Keough, who took a stage win in the Tour of Utah last season.

However, there will be other opportunities for the man from Letterkenny throughout the week, as the 3rd, 5th and 6th stages all feature summit finishes.

The Tour de San Luis has a particularly impressive line-up this year, with Peter Sagan (Cannondale), Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha),Thor Hushovd (BMC), and Mark Cavendish who makes his debut in Omega Pharma – Quickstep’s colours.

Deignan has recently completed a training camp in Scottsdale, Arizona alongside new fellow Irish team mate Martyn Irvine. The team also took part in testing at the FASTER Wind Tunnel and Performance Center also in Scottsdale.

Following on from the camp, the 8-man squad flew directly to Argentina where they arrived last Thursday. After a difficult season last year, Deignan will be hoping to get his campaign off to a good start in San Luis.
