Having blown away the cobwebs at Gent-Wevelgem yesterday, Sam Bennett is being backed by his team to go to Scheldeprijs on Wednesday to aim for victory.
While Bennett was a non-finisher at Gent Wevelgem, he had not raced since the Tour de France and clearly needed a good work out to get back into the rhythm of racing.
And now Deceuninck-QuickStep is convinced Scheldeprijs can come down to a sprint that the Irishman can win.
The team is sending New Zealand champion Shane Archbold, Yves Lampaert, Michael Mørkøv, Gent-Wevelgem runner-up Florian Sénéchal, neo-pro Jannik Steimle, and Bert Van Lerberghe to support the Irishman.
The 170km race starting and finishing in Schoten has come down to a bunch sprint every year for the past decade. Mark Cavendish is a three-time winner and Marcel Kittel took victory five times in the event.
“This year’s Scheldeprijs will consist of a local circuit
with no cobblestones, meaning it will almost certainly end up in a mass sprint,”
said Deceuninck-QuickStep sports director Wilfried Peeters.
“We have a strong team, capable of controlling and shaping the race. Sam is our leader and he can get a good result on Wednesday, especially as he’ll count on a solid lead-out, which includes Michael, who did such a great job in guiding him at the Tour, and Shane.”
