The death has been announced of former international cyclist Michael Delaney, who has died after suffering from cancer for some time.
Michael was among the top paracyclists on the Irish team in the relatively early days of the paracycling programme within Cycling Ireland.
He represented Ireland at the Paralympics in Beijing back in 2008, with David Peelo as pilot on their tandem. And he competed internationally on many other occasions with Con Collis as pilot.
Delaney, who was visually impaired, was a top track and field athlete before taking up top level cycling and won bronze in the high jump at the World Paralympic Championships in 2003.
On the bike, he and Peelo medaled at the Paracycling Pan-American Championships in Colombia in 2007; taking bronze in both the match sprint and pursuit.
Michael's sad passing was confirming today in a statement by Cycling Ireland in which the national governing body paid tribute to him.
"It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Paralympian Michael Delaney, following a hard battle with cancer," Cycling Ireland said.
"Michael represented Ireland alongside tandem pilot Dave Peelo at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008 and many UCI World Cups and World Championships in the years leading up to the Games.
"Michael contributed greatly to the team efforts and his work and determination allowed many others to follow in his path.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Fionnuala, and his two children, along with the Delaney family.
"Michael will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues in the Paracycling community."
