An Irish cycling team will compete at this year’s World University Championships in Poland from July 9th to 13th and applications are now being sought from interested riders by the body tasked with overseeing the operation, Student Support Ireland (SSI).
There’s also a vacancy for a team manager with the full job description and requirements outlined on studentsport.ie
SSI will work with Cycling Ireland to select the appropriate riders and a manager.
Cycling Ireland chief executive Geoff Liffey said while no team has been sent to the championships for some years, this year’s outing would give those riders selected a rare chance to compete abroad as part of an Irish team.
“We have a number of very, very good riders based in Ireland and abroad in college and this is a chance for them to wear an Irish jersey and really do well because I feel there’s a good standard here at the moment,” he said.
“We haven’t done it for quite a few years but it’s a good opportunity and we feel it will bring on our riders and give them a taste of international competition,” he added.
As it stands, Ireland will send representatives from seven sports; archery, equestrian, golf, karate, match-racing, orienteering and cycling, with this year being the fifth year cycling has been included in the championships.
Athletes who wish to be considered for selection must first be nominated by their sport’s national governing body, in this case, Cycling Ireland.
Once nominated, eligible athletes must submit the nomination form and an academic eligibility form – both available to download on studentsport.ie - as well as two passport photos and two copies of their passport identification page.
Following that, nomination forms received by the Student Sport Ireland High Performance Committee will compare the athlete’s competition history and achievements against the agreed selection criteria.
Only on the ratification of the athlete’s nomination will the students’ participation at the relevant FISU World University Championships be confirmed.
Those riders no longer in third level but who obtained their qualification last year are eligible for selection under a "year of grace" rule.
The cycling events will take place in the town of Jelenia Gora, 90 minutes west of Wroclaw in the very west of the country.

Closing date for applications is Friday March 31st.
