Thomas De Gendt and Tim Wellens are, according to De Gendt, planning to ride home from Il Lombardia to end their season.

They'll ride from Como near Milan to Semmerzake; a journey of 1,002.5km with 15,177 metres of elevation gain.

De Gendt, the Vuelta king of the mountains, has shared the Strava files (below) for the six stages the Belgian duo will complete.

They will ride a number of one-day races in Italy before riding Il Lombardia - the Tour of Lombardy in old money - on Saturday week.

And then they will bike-pack all the way home to Belgium when both Lotto-Soudal riders are from. On the journey they will carry all of their kit on their bikes.

Their ride, aimed at unwinding after the end of season, follows a similar epic journey by Conor Dunne and Larry Warbasse.

When they realised their team Aqua Blue Sport was not only closing, but was ceasing immediately, they  embarked on a long bike ride.

Both had been due to ride the Tour of Britain until the team owner Rick Delaney pulled the plug on the team with no warning.

So Dunne and Warbasse, with characteristic good cheer, set about going on their own NoGo Tour; a bike packing journey that took them from the south France to Italy and back.

Thomas De Gendt said he and Tim Wellens began planning their journey in May. He added they did some testing in August and will start their trip home the day after Il Lombardia.
