David McQuaid and David McCann have officially unveiled their new UCI Continental ‘Synergy Baku Cycling Project’ team ahead of its first assignment, the Tour de Langkawi.
It will ride mainly on the Asian circuit but will also ride in Europe later in the year. The team is registered in Azerbaijan and as well as the two Irishmen at the helm, it also includes former An Post-Sean Kelly Irish rider Connor McConvey among its rider roster.
McQuaid’s company Velosolutions will have a significant part in the team. He will be technical director while his colleague Julia Dobernig will be logistics manager.
The company, which is based in Dublin, will be responsible for the running of the project including administration for the team, sourcing and managing equipment and sponsors, acquiring race invitations and planning race programme logistics.
McCann will be team captain, performance analyst and coach. Hunt, the former British national champion and Tour de France rider, will be ‘head sporting director’. Iranian Daryoush Mohammedzadeh will be an assistant sporting director.
Both McQuaid and McCann have told stickybottle they believe the riders can make an impact from the off this year, and that one of the goals of the team will be to develop the six Azeri men on the 16-rider roster towards the 2016 Olympics.
They both said the team is riding the Tour de Langkawi looking for a winning start. With the likes of local favourite Anuar Manan, the only Malaysian to have won a stage in the race, and experienced sprinter Rico Rogers of New Zealand, the team will be in with a shout in the bunch sprints.

There was plenty of interest in the team at the pre Tour de Langkawi launch
