Dan Martin is no stranger to La Flèche Wallonne; indeed it's a race he has excelled in though he's never won it, not yet anyway.
The Irish climber has competed in the event, finishing on Mur de Huy, no fewer than 12 times; placing 2nd twice and 3rd once. He's been in the top 6 a total of six times, including 5th last year.
He didn't ride yesterday's event as he's competing in the Tour of the Alps as he prepares for the Giro. But it's safe to say there's not much Martin doesn't know about La Flèche Wallonne.
However, having missed the race yesterday for the first time since his debut in 2009, he watched it for the first time on TV. And he learned something any TV viewer could have told him; aside from the brilliant finish it can be a long and boring race to watch.
And that's exactly what hit Dan Martin yesterday as he tuned into the TV coverage to cheer on Israel Start-Up Nation team mate Michael Woods.
"First time in my career I’m not racing La Flèche Wallonne," he said on social media during the coverage.
"Strange feeling but I now realise why people say it’s a boring race. As a rider it’s one of the most intense stressful races on the calendar. Interesting how it doesn’t translate into good viewing."
