Dan Martin 8th in WorldTour 2017 as five Irish make rankings

The latter part of Dan Martin’s season was wiped out by his Tour crash; the Irishman on scoring points one for a minor placing after he came back to racing. Yet he was still 8th in the WorldTour in 2017.

Dan Martin has placed 8th in the end of season WorldTour rankings, with a total of five Irish riders scoring points.

Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) topped the rankings on 3,582 points from Chris Froome (Team Sky) on 3,452 points.

And Giro winner and world TT champion Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) was 3rd on 2,545 points.

Irish rider Martin enjoyed a fantastic Tour de France with 6th overall.

But he also took eight top 10 placings on stages. And two of those – a 2nd and 3rd – carried WorldTour ranking points.

Martin has 2,050 points, 400 of which were scored for his general classification placing in the Tour.

He also netted 315 points for each of his 3rd placings overall in Paris Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné.

Meanwhile, his 2nd in Liège-Bastogne-Liège was worth 400 points. And 2nd in La Flèche Wallonne won him 320 points.

His next highest points tally was for 6th overall back in March at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. That performance secured for him 140 points.

In hindsight, the second half of his season was almost completely wiped out by his crash at the Tour de France.

He was forced to rest after fracturing his back and so missed the Vuelta.

And while he rode well in the Worlds, his 10 points for 36th at the Tour of Lombardy were the only ones he scored after the Tour.

Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) placed 75th in the World Tour rankings on 548 points. Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) was 77th on 522 points.

Philip Deignan (Team Sky) placed 333rd with 23 points and Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac) was ranked 384th, with 10 points.

Bennett scored points in a total of 20 races, the most of any of the Irish riders.

His Paris-Nice stage win was worth 60 points and each of his four Tour of Turkey wins was worth 40 points.

Roche rose up the rankings over the past week; his 3rd overall at the Tour of Guangxi worth 215 points.
