Dan Martin struck a very upbeat tone after his 3rd place on stage 2 of the Tour of the Alps yesterday when he rode a great finale to make it into the chasing group that rode away from everyone else in pursuit of Adam Yates.
At the end of the stage Yates (BikeExchange) and Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) finish solo 1st and 2nd some 41 seconds apart. Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) led in a three-man group some 58 seconds down on Yates, with the rest of the field scattered all over the road in their wake.
The Irish rider, who looked great yesterday as the Giro d'Italia nears, is now 3rd overall 1:04 down on Yates having gained a considerable amount of time on most of the other general classification men in the field after almost 3,000 metres of climbing in 121km.
“Today was a good test for me. I suffered a bit at the bottom of the final climb and got dropped but I stayed focused and did a big effort to move up," Martin (34) said after the stage.
"On the last climb, it was really aggressive with multiple attacks. I felt quite good at that moment and I made another big effort to go across to a strong group that was chasing Yates.
"Sivakov then went away with five kilometers to go and we just kept going full gas to the finish to get the best result possible. There is still a long time to the Giro and today was definitely a good sign ahead of that. I’m quite satisfied with how it went today.”
