Dan Martin said he did not know how many riders were ahead of him and as far as he was concerned he may be sprinting for a medal at the Rio Olympics.
Having equalled Ciaran Power’s record as best placed finish by an Irish rider at the Olympics yesterday, Dan Martin conceded after the race he had no idea who was ahead of him.
The specialist climber sprinted very hard at the front of his four-man group fighting for 12th place and conceded afterwards he thought he may be sprinting for a medal.
During an interview with Irish Times journalist Ian O’Riordan on the finish line in Rio; Martin said the final was chaos, leading to a situation where he believed he may be still vying for the podium as he came up the finishing straight.
“Everyone just tried to get to the top of the climbs and then looked at where they were,” he said.
“We’re not really racing, just going as hard as I can. We got zero information out there as well.
“I had no idea if there were 50 guys ahead of me or five guys. I didn’t know if I was going for a medal. I had no idea at all.
“And I think that was the same for everyone. There was no information on the course.
“Cycling is a great sport. You’re coming up the hills, look around, and it’s all the best riders in the world. And it’s nice to be a part of that.”
