Dan Martin targeted by thieves after crashing hard during Catalunya stage

Dan Martin and Romain Bardet were on the tarmac after their 70km per hour when they say thieves moved in and got to work in Catalunya.

Having crashed for the second year in a row on the final stage of Volta a Catalunya, Dan Martin was also targeted by thieves.

Indeed, he wasn’t the only cyclist to have items taken while they were down on the ground.

Having become detached from their bikes during the fall with 40km to go, Martin and French rider Romain Bardet both noticed later their Garmins were missing.

And both have since taken to Twitter to confirm their devices had been whipped while they were on the deck.

Luckily, Dan Martin got a spare bike from his UAE Team Emirates mechanic and was able to finish the stage.

Bardet was not quite as lucky; the AG2R-La Mondiale rider being unable to finish the race.

He suffered a blow to the ribs and his team said he had suspected fractures which would need further investigation.

"The crash was very severe because we were descending very fast," explained Bardet of the 70km per hour group crash.

"I have hurt my ribs, but the effects could have been much worse. I am now waiting for the results of the additional examinations."

Dan Martin has since taken to Twitter to confirm his Garmin was lifted, he believes by someone taking advantage of his misfortune.

“To the guy who stole my Garmin off my bike when I was picking myself up off the floor… please send the training file. My Training Peaks needs to be updated.”

Bardet then added on social media today that he too had been targeted during the crash.
