Dan Martin has said he felt blocked during the Tour de France and he was working with his UAE Team Emirates squad to resolve the issue.
For the second time this week, Martin has said he has felt his usual strong self in the early part of the mountain stages but then ran out of gas.
And this time he was even clearer that it was something in the team - though exactly what is unclear - rather than his own form that is the issue.
When he first joined UAE Team Emirates his form was below par in the early part of last season, though he came good at the Tour and claimed a stage.
Early in the 2018 season he suggested some of the products for refueling and nutrition were not what he was used to.
Whether is he now revisiting that is not clear, but he says the issue for him on this Tour will become clear in time.
“I felt like there was something blocking me the whole Tour and I'm working with the team to get to the bottom of it and come back stronger,” he said.
Speaking to cyclingnews on the Tour, Dan Martin added: "It's been a bit strange, really. Obviously I came
in with really excellent condition, and, for whatever reason, it just didn't
happen.
“I think the team's got to look at why the performance
wasn't there, but obviously today it was nice to finish on what was probably
one of my best days of the race. We'll just go forward with that," he
added of his 19th place yesterday.
"I had the condition, but there was just something
blocking me, and that's what was frustrating.”
When asked specifically by cyclingnews editor Daniel
Benson specifically what the issue was, Martin replied:
"I know, but I can't say. We'll look at it, and talk
to the team about it, and you'll find out soon enough.
“We'll have talks later and figure it out going forward.
As I say, it's good to feel good on the last stage."
