Dan Martin has confirmed his departure from QuickStep in favour of UAE Team Emirates
Dan Martin signs with UAE Team Emirates
Irish climber and Grand Tour contender Dan Martin has signed with UAE Team Emirates.
The move had been well flagged in media reports in recent weeks. Stickybottle was just one media outlet to signal the transfer in advance.
Dan Martin is leaving QuickStep after two years and has signed a two-year deal with his new team.
The WorldTour squad is also pursuing Fabio Aru, the Italian champion currently with Astana.
UAE Team Emirates confirmed the signing of Dan Martin today. It also said it had signed Rory Sutherland.
Dan Martin, who is not riding the Vuelta, said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

“The opportunity to join an ambitious group backed by globally recognised brands and use my experience to create a team capable of challenging the best in the world was one that I couldn’t refuse,” he said.
“UAE Team Emirates share my vision, my attention to detail and my passion for the sport.
“And as I enter into the most important years of my career, they offer me the best platform possible to reach my potential and fulfil my sporting goals.
“To race with such a talented roster under the guidance of a highly motivated and experienced staff is incredibly exciting.
“But I also realise this is more than a team as we work with our partners to not only promote the sport I love but a healthy lifestyle and two wheels on a global scale”.
UAE Team Emirates manager Carlo Saronni said Dan Martin’s signing was a valuable one for the team.
“We’re moving with the perspective of bringing quality athletes on to the team, athletes with the right motivations to best represent the spirit of our project,” he said.
“Daniel Martin is capable of excelling both in the (one-day) races as well as the major tours.
“We will be able to create the conditions that will allow him to express himself at his best.
"And, with this in mind, we have also secured ourselves the performance of an experienced pacer like Sutherland”.
I want to thank everyone at @quickstepteam for 2 years full of great memories. Determined to finish my time here in the same successful way. pic.twitter.com/fjCPXsOf5e
