Dan Martin set for late season final racing with UAE Team Emirates

Dan Martin is nearing the end of his time with UAE Team Emirates but has racing in Italy on his agenda before parting company with his employer of two years

Dan Martin is back in action for UAE Team Emirates in Italy tomorrow as he nears the end of his two-year tenure with the Italian, Middle Eastern-backed, squad.

The
33-year-old Irishman, who has enjoyed some of his career highlights at this
time of year, has signed for Israel Cycling Academy for the next two years.

But
before leaving for the new WorldTour outfit, Martin has some racing left to do.

He
rides the 207.4km Giro del l'Emilia
(1.HC) tomorrow; which takes the riders from Bologna back to
San Luca, which overlooks the starting city.

The finale features the
testing 2km climb that hosted the TT that got the Giro underway this year; the
riders facing it four times tomorrow.

And with all the current Grand Tour champions in the race – Primoz Roglic, Egan Bernal and Richard Carapaz – among a field with lots of heavy hitters, it should be a great race.

Martin has a great record in Italy when the leaves are falling; 8th in the Tour of Lombardy in 2009 having just turned 23 years was the first real sign of things to come from him.

He was 2nd the 2010 edition of tomorrow’s race, 2nd in Lombardy the following year, 4th in the same race 2013 and the winner in 2014 before claiming 9th in Lombardy last year.

Of late he has been
quiet; some attacks in Canada before the Worlds, which he abandoned, the only
real action for him since the Tour de France in July.

It is unclear how his form will be tomorrow, or indeed his approach to the race, but if his legs are with him anything is possible.
