Dan Martin’s stage and overall win in Catalunya has helped his world ranking points tally ahead of his assault on the Ardennes Classics in the next couple of weeks
By Shane Stokes
While he hasn’t competed since winning the Volta a Catalunya on March 24th, Irish pro Dan Martin has maintained his strong position in the latest rankings for the UCI WorldTour.
Martin jumped up to an excellent eighth with his Catalunya success and although he didn’t compete in Sunday’s Tour of Flanders, he remains in the same position overall in the latest standings.
Martin’s points also see Ireland remain a solid eleventh in the nations’ standings.
The top slot continues to be held by the Slovakian rider Peter Sagan (Cannondale Pro Cycling), who finished second on Sunday and had a sufficient advantage to hold off Flanders winner Fabian Cancellara.
Cancellara reduced his deficit by twenty points but is still 62 behind Sagan. However he has a chance to take over the number one slot in next weekend’s Paris-Roubaix if he recovers from his crash today at the semi-classic Scheldeprijs, where he was able to remount and finish.
Martin has told stickybottle that he will next compete in the Brabantse Pijl semi-Classic on April 10th. He will use that to sharpen up prior to his next big targets, the Ardennes Classics.
He will ride the first of those three events, the Amstel Gold Race, on April 14th. After that he will compete in Flèche Wallonne on April 17th and then Liège-Bastogne-Liège on April 21st.
Martin was sixth and fifth respectively in the latter two races last year, and believes he should have better form this time round.
Ireland’s other WorldTour rider, Nicolas Roche (Team Saxo Tinkoff), is yet to start clocking up points this year.
